I'm searching for any hints on what I could check to make sure ShellExecute is working. There was just an "edit"... Word documents(docx) is open fine. hInstance returns code 31, which is no file association. check over here

It is not a true HINSTANCE, however. The return value is cast as an HINSTANCE for backward compatibility with 16-bit Windows applications. Does double-clicking on a PDF open it? What is in "params" (and why are you passing it at all)? Sharp Mx-6240n Error Codes
I find it hard to believe that the user needs to downgrade > their adobe reader I agree, it seems odd to me too. I don't have regedit rights so is there any other way to associate printing of pdf files with certain application. All other document types seem to open up properly, but not pdf's.
